5G impact on the cloud gaming industry

The market for 5G cloud gaming is expected to “skyrocket” over the next few years.  With tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Apple competing for the first place in the gaming industry, the whole market is expected to grow at a fast pace.

In the meantime, the 5G race has officially begun.  So it is now all up to network operators and technology giants to deliver the goods.  5G cloud gaming is one of the first areas of 5G industry focus.

Hi-tech companies are turning to cloud gaming, and they each try to integrate it on their platforms smoothly.   5G networks will also give a significant boost for massive connectivity and large-scale availability.  Gamers will be able to access their services anytime, anywhere.

Cloud gaming market overview

The cloud gaming market has grown a lot in the last couple of years.  It is expected to grow even further, with major tech giants developing their platforms or joining forces to provide new advanced services.

Google is already at the forefront of cloud gaming.  Apple plans to move on to video games, with the Arcade platform available this fall.

Rumors also want Amazon to compete, with its subsidiary Twitch, the most popular live-streaming gaming platform.  In the meantime, Amazon also possesses one of the most sophisticated cloud computing infrastructure, Amazon Web Services (AWS).  It is, therefore, perfectly reasonable for companies with such infrastructure to invest in cloud gaming, as it is still a way to provide subscription services and in-app purchases.

Big names of the gaming industry, on the other hand, are also preparing their services.  EA with Project Atlas and Tencent are also preparing their cloud gaming platforms.  Rumors have also been heard about Walmart as well.

Gaming industry collaborations

Sony and Microsoft announced their collaboration to improve cloud gaming and entertainment experience.  Under this agreement, both companies will jointly “explore the development of future solutions at Microsoft Azure to support their respective games and content-streaming services.”  They will also explore the use of Microsoft’s existing Microsoft Azure database for Sony’s games and content-streaming services.  These efforts will include building a better development platform for the creator community.

This partnership will also explore cooperation on semiconductor products as well as AI.  The two companies plan to integrate Sony’s image sensors with Microsoft Azure AI technology into cloud and edge.  This way, they will leverage both Sony’s semiconductors and Microsoft cloud technology.

5G for cloud gaming

Cloud gaming services try to get as many titles as they can to offer gamers, enabling them either downloading or streaming them on the platform of their choice.

The global gaming community is always ready for the next, big step that will change the way to enjoy gaming.  5G technology may now redefine gaming reality.  5G will offer remarkably high speeds and almost unlimited resources in the cloud.  Together with a response rate of 100 times faster than 3G (100 milliseconds) and 50 times faster than 4G (50 milliseconds), 5G will allow devices to receive signals at 1 millisecond.  What does this mean for gamers?

Gamers will be able to welcome a new gaming experience without loading screens, waiting times, and lagging on their smartphone, tablet, or laptop.  With 5G speeds, latency and availability, gaming on the go will become the new obsession for gamers worldwide.

Next level gaming with 5G AR

The bridge between virtual reality and real-life has the potential to unlock new, exciting worlds.  In the summer of 2016, thanks to Pokemon Go, the world got a first small glimpse of AR (Augmented Reality) in the gaming industry.

This year, thanks to the technological breakthrough brought by 5G technology, AR is upgraded.  Instead of simple, incremental reality elements on your mobile screen, you may now play alongside 50 more gamers and fight with creatures 50 meters high, visible only through your phones.

With 5G, the new gaming revolution has begun.  Let’s get ready to play.
